** Map of Kent:

This ancient map of Kent was printed in 1874 in the Beers Atlas. The book is entitled County Atlas of Litchfield Connecticut, From Actual Surveys by and under the Direction of F.W. Beers. Published by F.W. Beers & Co. 36 Velsey Street, New York. 1874.

The table of contents includes Town Plans, Village Plans, Table of Distances, Post Offices, Population, United States Map, Connecticut Map, County Map, and Business Notes. This last page is missing from our edition.

Mr. Beers divided the town map according to the existing numbered school districts. Before the present Kent Center School was built, each hamlet in town had its own one room school, and often a post office or a small store. If you look carefully, you will see that there is no District #11. That schoolhouse was originally located on a treacherously steep road in an area later incorporated into Geer Mountain District #7. Because of the difficulty of access, the school was closed and District #11 was absorbed by the surrounding districts.

Another close inspection reveals that many of the roads no longer exist. Often the traces of these old roads may be found in the woods today. The remaining roads, with a few straightened curves and rock cuts through hills, are well traveled by today's high speed traffic.

Color copies of this map are available for $10, or a two-sided map with a similar close-up map of the village center on the reverse side for $15. One-sided laminated copies of the town are $15. Laminated copies of the double-sided map are $20.

The laminated copies of this map make it ideal for taking out on the road as you prowl around the byways of Kent.
